ok so we all know that they had/have trans problems with it jumping out of gear...my question is, did they jump out of gear new from the factory, after 1,000 hrs use, 5,000hrs.? just wondering what the story is.

There were problems with the early models because quality control did not check the assembly of the transmissions, nor the HP of the engines. After numerous failures and several reports that I made, the service department issued some service bulletins on the transmissions. I can't remember the one about jumping out of gear, but I was aware of the problem at the time.

The main problem with the early transmission was that the engines were producing way more power than the specifications stated.

The extra HP, combined with the fact that the transmissions were assembled with less than specified pre-load on the shaft bearings allowed the shafts to flex so the gears moved apart enough to reduce the contact area of the teeth, which caused the teeth to break. The related survice bulletin specified that the bearings needed to be pre-loaded about 15 lbs above the bearing manufacturer's recommendation to keep the shafts from flexing. When the transmissions were assembled according to the new pre-load specs, the number of transmission failures dropped a lot.

AC also put dynamometers at the end of the assembly line and adjusted the HP to near the specified ratings in the product literature. Some tractors were coming off the line with 116 - 120 HP; that was cut back to 96 - 98 HP. It was easy to turn up the HP in the field, but those who did it put the transmission at risk at their own expense.

I've had a straight 190 diesel since 1969. It has the light rear end in it. We've never had issues with it jumping out of gear. Once it's in gear, we usually used the power director to start and stop which saves a lot of grinding it into gear when in a hurry to get going. It still has the light rear end in it, so it's been apart plenty, but we've never replaced anything other than bearings and the power director clutch once.

When new they worked just fine it was after ???? hour some of them started doing it. Part of it was from what I have learned by people shifting them on the fly and part was just a weak set up in the early trannys
