I s an early D-17D (1958) four digit ser # a pos or neg ground system. Getting it tomorrow and need to put battery in.

D17 diesel comes with a 12v generator and positive ground. If it has power steering, it would be difficult to convert to anything else.

Take a look at the ground battery cable. If it has the large terminal to fit the large battery post its + grounded and is probably 6 volts. Do what Old suggested to make sure it hasn't been converted to 12 volts and has an alternator. You will pop a diode in an instant if you + ground the alternator. My first car with 12 volts was a 57 Chevy and I'm not sure when all the tractors were changed to 12 volts. Hal

As far as starting it, it doesn't matter. I think but can not be 100% sure that it would be a + ground system. Now if it has had an alternator put on the it will be a - ground and if it has an alternator on it and you hook it up wrong you will smoke test it, the alternator that is
