D17 won't start

My D17 has been running smooth, had been starting quickly without trouble. Then I inadvertantly left the ignition on - long enough to totally kill the battery. Upon recharging it though, I cannot get it started - not even a pop. I checked and found what appears to be weak/intermittent spark in all but the forward cylinder (which seems fine.) I replaced and set points, put in new condenser, put on new distributer cap. Nothing helps. I did not replace rotor. Could the coil have been affected by letting the ignition on? I thought a coil either worked or it didn't - and since I'm getting SOME spark, I figured it was OK. Any thoughts?

OK. Now keep in mind I'm getting SOME spark. Can a coil be 'kinda' bad, which implies kinda good, too? How do I test it? Thanks CliffordPaul

Yes a coil can be good enough to give you spark but bad enough that it will not give you enough for the engine to run. As far as testing one most people don't own the equipment to be able to truelly test it. Bite the bullet and buy a new coil cost is less then $30 for one and most are around half that depending on where you buy one from

Yep, roasted the coil. Happened twice on my D-17. File the points while you"re there.

Well if the points where closed and you left the ky on yep you let the smoke out of the coil. I did that last year on my D-17 but it was hot wired and I forgot to unhook the hot wire. The coil blew up and sounded like a shot gun going off and it made a big mess of theng. But any how you probably fried your coil

I did this to a couple of my tractors. Both times, the coil failed. This won't always happen but it can happen. The coil is designed for intermittent duty. Current flows when the points close. It stops flowing when the points open (except for ringing between the coil and the condenser). The points are usually open about half the time. If the points were closed when the engine stopped turning, full voltage is going through the coil 100% of the time. Occasionally the points will fry but not always - particularly if they were in good shape. Since you've changed everything but the coil, a new one is probably in order. But before you get one, make sure your wires from the battery to the ignition switch and from the switch to the coil weren't damage form the current.
