Hi Loren, I'd give you my pitman stick length but it might not be the same as you need. There were apparently two different cutter bar supports used on the B/C mowers. When I had to replace mine, the replacement moved the cutter bar out about 2 inches, necessitating a longer pitman stick. Anyway, here's how you can determine the length you need: Position the knife in the cutter bar as shown here. Then rotate the drive pulley such that the pitman bearing is at the outermost point. Then measure for the necessary pitman stick length. That will provide the necessary knife register as shown here. Yes, use 1/4" diameter bolts to attach the straps to the stick, except for one larger (I think it's 5/16") bolt at the drive end straps (through the wood). There's also a larger adjusting bolt (I think 3/8") for the tightness of the drive end straps to the pitman bearing housing. That's in addition to the larger carriage bolt (not through the wood) at the driven end straps that controls the tightness to the knife drive ball. I would recommend using elastic stop nuts throughout. Since the locking strap used to lock the carriage bolt special nut finally wore beyond use on my mower, I used a double nut arrangement in addition to an elastic stop nut as shown here. The original pitman stick had cross rivits at each end of the stick to help prvent splitting and pull-out from the straps. I used #10 machine screws instead as shown here and here. I can't think of any reason why the lift I made wouldn't work just as well on a C. The dimensions should be the same. I love mine. I should have done it a long time ago. Much easier on the old right arm. The cylinder will not retract by itself w/o a weight (or force) forcing it to with the control in the down position - but perhaps you already know that. If it still doesn't retract, then it probably is something internal to the pump itself. Before taking the pump apart, I strongly recommend you have the official AC B/C service manual.
