I am changing my wd to 12 volt negative ground using a 10si delco alternator[12:00 position
] with the 3 wire set up.there are 2 questions.! what kind of ignition switch should i use? how many posts will it have and such so i dont get wrong one. #2 where is the best place[ auto parts store, or radio shack]? type place to get a coouple of resistors for the coil and lights? thanks in advance!

by the way this tractor sits on my farm about90 iles away from here so i amworking out of my old manual when trying to get this ready to go.

i bought a 12 volt coil and a alternator tonight getting ready to make the switch. i had a generator witha regulartor on it because the 3 position switch was not available when i had to make the switch years ago. i bought the 10 and 16 guage wire and already have a toggle switch. so we're making progress! Still will have to probably get help but Thanks to all who have helped so far!

If thats a full true 12 volt coil then NO BALLAST IS REQUIRED. The points will still be fine REGARDLESS its just that if you used a 6 volt coil unballasted (it will overheat) on a 12 volt system they will burn up quicker BUT NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE 6 OR 12 VOLT POINTS (see my post below) its cuz you are switching too much current.

they said when i got it that it has the internal resister. i've got various drawing of different conversions and trying to sort thru the electrical lingo but will soon hopefully have the old girl back on her feet again.

DO get a real 12v coil ( napa ic14sb ).. or DO get the dropping resistor.. once that is done.. points and condensor will be fine.

You can use the same points and condensor regardless if you stay at 6 or convert to 12 volts. The points are concerned/rated more with how much current they can switch and their voltage withstand rating is wayyyyy yyyyy higher then 6 or 12 volts anyway. Likewise, the working and voltage withstand rating of the condensor is much higher then 6 or 12 volts. The coil can still fire with no condensor at all, but a weaker spark and the points would burn up quickly.

Here's my advice.

Either get a 15$ NAPA ic14sb real 12v coil and forget the resistor.. or get the mention 1.8ohm icr 13 resistor.

For the alternator.. put a trailer marker lamp in line with the #1 terminal from switched power... line from the coil is fine, and wire #2 terminal to the charge stud.

Tim those Ignition Ballast Resistors are available at like Tractor Supply or Rural King or Central Tractor etc or auto parts stores, I believe the Napa Echlin Part Number is ECHICR13. They are usually rated somewhere around 1.25 to 1.85 ohms. It goes in series after the ignition switch and before the coil to drop the coil voltage down to 6 volts.

The ignition switch can be as simple as a 2 terminal SPST ON/OFF and either a turn key or toggle or push/pull and availabe at about any auto parts store or a tractor outlet as above.

Its BAT input terminal would be fed off the load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeetr and its IGN output wire to the ballast and then the ballast wires to the coil.

Heres how I wire GM 10 SI 3 wire alternators so they function sort of like a one wire BUT BETTER in my opinion cuz they dont require high RPM to excite and dont cause any trickle battery discharge.

The big rear main alternator output terminal goes to the wire that used to be connected to the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay. HOWEVER if that wire wasnt already upgraded, when I convert from a Genny to an Alternator, I replace that wire with a 10 Gauge and it runs from the alternators main output up to the LOAD (NOT to battery/starter) side of the ammeter. I also replace/use 10 Gauge from the ammeters other SUPPLY terminal to the battery/starter.

The little side number 2F Voltage Sense Terminal gets connected (use a short 14 jumper wire) right up to to and with the big main output terminal mentioned above.

For the little 1R side Excitation Terminal, run a 16 or so gauge wire from the ignition switches IGN (which is HOT ONLY when ignition is turned on) terminal and in series with it place a 10 ohm 5 watt current limiting protection resistor (dont really need that much wattage power rating, but they are heavy duty built and easy to wire). Then in the rare event the tractor continues to run cuz of alternator backfeed when the ignition is switched OFF, I add in series a 5 amp 50 PIV minimum Diode. The diode must be wired with negative cathode end to the alternator and positive anode end to the switch. Again, the ratings are not that exact but about any diode over a few amps and 50 volts or so works.

Dont forget to change the battery to negative ground and the coil needs to be wired so the negative goes to ground via the distributor points and the positive gets power from the ignition switch and you have to reverse ammeter leads also if you�re just now changing polarities.

so you basically used the one wire set up? have you had any problem keeping battery charged?when you rev engine up and it will keep charging when rpms are lowered? Sure wish the idiots hadnt stole my generator out of my truck when they stole it.lol

Resister you can get at an auto parts store. Just ask for a 2 wire one for a mid 70s dodge truck. As far as the lights you need to switch to 12 volt bulbs, BTDT and you can also get them at the auto parts store. On all my WD.WD45 I use just a plain simple ignition switch and wire in a diode so the alternator will not back feed the coil. I use Radio shack part # 276-1661
