D17 was driven and ran fine in December. A few months later it would start, but dies when I try to move it. I will certainly check into the fuel supply, but is there a good way to check the transmission and make sure it is free. I should ad that I had been starting the tractor with everything in Nuetral without depressing the clutch. It then seemed to start dragging the starter that way and I started depressing the cluth to start it?? Any ideas? Can I jack up the back of the tractor and check by moving the wheels?? I assume I should be able to place it in gear and still move it with the clutch in. I just want to make sure the tranny isn't bound for some unknown reason. Thanks for the help.

I am having a similar problem w/ my D17 , it will start with clutch in, then it went dead, two weeks later it is starting fine, but it wont engage in a gear and I hear a chain clinging sound from the tranny, or so I think that is what it is. Is this the similar occurence with your problem?? any input would be appreciated. thanks John

We didn't have any noises associated with this problem. I am leaning towards the transmission being in two gears, such that they work against one another and kill the tractor. Sounds like it may be time to take the top plate off and peek inside.

Do you think the clutch is releasing? I wouldn't pull the tractor you could damage the drive train.

Since I'm able to start the tractor and the engine runs fine with the clutch in, I assume it must be releasing?

When we tried to drag start it, both back tires moved and in oppisite directions. If the brakes were sticking, I assume we wouldn't have seen this tire action. What's the easiest way to manually test the tranny?

You may need to pull the transmission cover and move those shifter rails. Hal
