On a 7080, with 5 forward and 1 reverse gear, not a powershift, with fast and slow and park lever on right, also has a Hi and Low foot knob on floor, I assume this Hi- Lo foot knob is like a torque on a IH tractor, is that correct? Does it hurt to run this 7080 all day in either the Hi or Lo, years ago in the early 70's, the IH big tractors (100+ horsepower) had problems when being run all day with the torque in the Lo position despite IH's position that it did not matter. I knew 3 different farmers with torques out within 300 hours, so I was wondering about the Hi/Lo on this 7080, thanks in advance to who may reply.

Also, when I push in the clutch pedal, the Hi/Lo knob on the floor automatically goes into the Lo position, is it suppose to?

Hi Poppop,

No it will not hurt the transmission to run in Lo for extended periods. And yes, the button should return to the Lo position when the clutch is depressed. These tractors were good solid tractors with one exception. Connecting rod bolts were not the best and would break on occasion destroying the motor. All 426 engines had similar problems. If you are going to make this your "BIG TRACTOR" and put lots of hours on it, I would suggest you contact ARP bolt company for some extreme duty con rod bolts and drop the pan and install them. They may be pretty pricey, but a lot cheaper than a new motor. Just my opinion from lots of experience with these motors.

Thank you so much LilFarmer, yes this 7080 is a big tractor to me and it will be my "big tractor", although I don't farm that much anymore. Still I don't want engine coming apart, it has 5480 hrs. on it, has a little noise when pulling, then going down a hill still pulling the noise is gone, a valve maybe?, or one of those connecting rod bolts loose??Very clean old tractor, I like it, except I can't get the tach to work, hour meter works though, any other comments on this 7080 from you would be very appreciated, thanks, the old farmer in Pa..
