D17 for hay

I have a first series D17 and want to use it to make hay. I have a small field (5 acres) of grass for hay, probably 2 cuttings a year. No big production here, just a weekend farmer-wannabe putting up some grass hay for his wife's horses.

Can anyone recommend equipment for such a job that compliments the D17 well?

An Allis hay rake was on EBay last week in Pierre, SD. Didn't sell. The guy wants $100 - well worth that for sure. Search EBay if you are interested for auction 260125812472.

You'll need a sickle mower and a baler as well. Sickle mowers aren't too expensive. Usually square balers are cheap as well. You must store square baled hay in a building on a wooden floor. They rot if outside in the weather or on the ground.

I did the same thing you are doing. Found a hay rake in Kansas for $40. Bought an 8N Ford with a side mount sickle mower. The baler was sold to me for $200. You can do this for not too much money. Hay was selling in Texas this winter for $6 to $8 per bale because of our drought - usually it is $3. Still, 5 acres ought to yield a lot of hay and pay for the equipment in the first year.

A D-17 is big enough to pull almost any square baler other then the ones that are 4X4. It would also handle a good number of round balers but again not the bigger ones like what I use which makes a 6X6 bale. It will also have the power to use a MOCO and just about any rake. Only thing that I would know that would limit the rake is if it doesn't have a 3 point. A D-17 is around 52 HP give or take a few HP so its about the right size for all the hay work. My self this year I'm rakeing with an Allis C and pull a MOCO with an Oliver 77 at 38HP so you have more then enough tractor

I have a D17 and use it for hay. I have a 7' sickle bar mower a 7' side discharge rake and a NH 271 baler. I put up about 9 acres of brome for my wifes horses too. I put up 450 bales this year so far and God willing I will get a fall cutting too. Good luck. My D17 is a great tractor for being 47 years old and she just loves to go out and work.
