Hello;

I have a 1963 series III D-17.
When you start it cold you have to have the power lever on the right in the neutral position as the foot clutch won"t release. However , after you run it twenty minutes or so it frees up and seems to work okay.
What is causing this, any ideas?

real common for rear seal or wick to drip oil after 40 years and coat the clutch plate with oil. i remove the starter and push in the clutch pedal, take a weed sprayer and mix a cup of laundry detergent with water. spray inside the hole and soak everything you can find. let it set several minutes. if there is a hole under the bottom center of the fly wheel, lay upside dwon and soak that too. after setting for a while, get the garden hose and wash everything out, use 10 gallons of water. start it up and run a while to dry everthing out.. see if that works.

Could be caused by rust on the flywheel/pressure plate, or could also be from oil from the rear main seal. One thing that helps some times is blocking the pedal down when you park it for the night. BTDT and have that problem on an 8N ford I have. I keep a cement block on the pedal when I'm not useing the tractor

Old, I have exactly the same problem on my 8N. I've split the tractor twice to figure out why it does it and never found anything. The Ford dealer was no help at all. For a couple of months after reassembly, the clutch worked fine. Then it would start doing it again.

By the way, I've used the cement block trick as well. I don't need to leave it on there all the time. Just put it on the clutch 15 to 20 minutes before use and everything works fine.

Well my 8N gets used very little so I have to leave it on or it will be fun to make work. The stupid thing will lock up in less then an hour so I have learned just to keep it there. Plus with haveing the back hoe on it I don't like the surprise of a stuck clutch
