transmission cover gasket

My old CA transmission cover gasket was metal. Can I replace it with ordinary cork gasket material? I can't seem to find a replacement on-line like the original metal one.

AGCO is a good bet on gaskets. Their prices are usually good on gaskets.

I think cork is not the best choice in this case. If you have a caliper, measure the thickness of the old gasket. Your local auto parts store should have a variety of different gasket materials that have different compression properties. I'd select a material that is firm rather than soft and of similar thickness and make a gasket. You'll need to buy a hole punch to make the gasket. You have the old gasket to use as a pattern.

The last alternative I'd suggest is to use red or blue RTV on both sides of the old gasket and put it back on the transmission. I needed to do this on a transmission cover for an Oliver 77 with a new gasket - and it still weeped a little bit. You need to be quick with RTV to get it to work well.

In any case, examine both surfaces of the transmission and cover to make sure they are clean and do not have cracks or creases that are hard to seal. You may need some RTV regardless of the choice you select.
