I purchased a voltage regulator for my 6 volt '58 CA. It's a Dixie TR-100. It came with no instructions, the seller hasn't answered my email. I can't find info on how to wire it properly. It has side mounted terminals marked L, BAT, F, and one on the bottom that is unmarked. I have the F to the F on the generator, BAT to the ammeter. Does anyone know what connects to the A on the generator and what to do with the other regulator terminal?

Yepeprs, I know ..... ..... .

Im unsure if you originaly had a 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) or a 4 terminal (BAT FLD LOAD ARM) VR but either can be made to work regardless....

On many 4 terminal VR's the 3 side by side are BAT FLD LOAD while the one off by itself or the bottom is the ARM terminal.

BAT on VR to load (NOT battery/starter) side of Ammeter

FLD on VR to FLD on Genny

ARM on VR to ARM on genny

LOAD is what feeds hot battery voltage up to loads like lights n ignition, usually to the BAT input terminal on the switches.

If it only had a 3 terminal VR before, loads were served off the ammeters load terminal, same one that wired down to BAT on the VR. If you change from a 3 to 4 terminal VR, they should be wired instead to the L terminal down on the VR and unhooked from the ammeter buttttt t the ammeters load terminal still wires to BAT on the VR.

It would still work if you didnt even use LOAD on the VR and instead fed loads off the ammeter (same as BAT on VR) but I would wire it correct i.e. serve loads off the L terminal on a 4 terminal VR

Get it ????? ???

Off topic, John. On my Tach, what about changing the Ford system to Negative ground and adding a dry cell on top of the battery to get to 12V? I think that should work and be a lot easier than figuring out how to provide opposite polarity for the tach only. What do you think? Denny

Denny, I feel bad cuz I cant help you as much as you did me with my D 15 questions, but here goes.

DISCLAIMERS LOL

1) Some of the Fords (not sure which models) used a Class B versus Class A charging system so if its a Class B you better ask the Ford people about polarity swaps.

2) I cant know how that tack works so dont bet your life on nutitn I say DUHHHHH H

That being said (cant help myself thats the lawyer side of my lawyer and engineer brain workin lol)

1) I think Rat Shack has some sort of low power solid state voltage converters, you may wanna look into that first.

2) If not the extra battery ought to work fine and a motorcycle battery ought to run that tach for hoursssss sssss sss upon hours before requiring a charge.

3) Theres an outside chance (Id try it) the tach, if its the kind I think it is, may still work at 6 volts PERIOD. The tachs Im thinkin of simply use the closing ignition points as the conductive ground path trigger signal so they do their magic electronic counting thing and send current through a galvo to deflect the needle. Many soild state devices like a transistor or SCR etc are more current then voltage devices and if theres enough forward bias voltage they will still conduct n trigger and work SO IT MAY WORK BUTTTTT TTTTT TTTT Im still worried about the galvo current source/use and if its based on 12 volts and you only have 6, the needle deflection wont be accurate grrrrr rrrrr rrr UNLESS you can trick it into being for say 4 versus 8 cylinders (if it has such a setting) which might make it accurate again on 6 volts DARNED IF I KNOW

Im trying to explain why I dont have your answer lol

I would try it at 6 volts (neg ground of course) ,,,,, ,look for a 6 to 12 converter,,,,, ,,,,,add the battery as you mentioned IN THAT ORDER BUT NOOOOO WARRANTY

If any this works post back buttttt ttttt if any of this lets the smoke out of the tach and fries it you need not comment lol

Thanks Ol John. I understand what you are saying. I"ll try it. The CA had the original cutout and 3 position light switch. I don"t believe the cutout was functional and the light switch was rusted in the low position. I had replaced the light switch with a used one that seems to be OK. It looks like I can replace the 3 pos switch with a new on/
off light switch.

You got it cuz regardless if a 3 or 4 terminal VR is used the light switch regulation is no longer in the circuit. If its an adjustable 3 brush genny and youre converting to a VR I set the 3rd brush to a higher charge rate (closer to fixed brush) if she dont charge enough.
