I am restoring a 1952 Allis Chalmers CA and need to know what type of gear oil, and how much to use in the rear end. I just drained a little over a gallon of milky (I suppose wet) oil from the two drain plugs. Also should I flush it first and with what?

Thanks to all for the replies. Had a hard time finding the center drain plug but I've flushed the system once, still looks like mayonaise. Once again should do the trick.

there are 3 plugs on the bottom that share the same cavity of oil. transmission, differential and hydrlaulic-pto. it holds 9 quarts, fill by your left foot the 1 inch pipe plug. new spec is universal hydraulic- transmission fluid or hytrans. it dont cost much, get at Wal Mart or farm store. done add solvent or detergent. Drain good, and add 8 quarts of hytrans, run a couple hours and do it again if it is milky. after that it should be "o.k." most times the water leaks in around the shift lever boot.

Keep forgetting that the hydraulic & rear end are the same compartment on these. Ignore my gear lube advice..use universal trans/hydraulic fluid in a CA rear end. Mike

I have a CA. it takes 20 weight if temp will be over 45 degrees and 10 weight if under 45 degrees. I would flush it out with something...it might be worth your while to pull the back PTO housing off and trans side cover to make sure it's cleaned out...not that big of deal...maybe a days work.

If I rememebr right theres also a drain plug on the PTO houseing you need to remove and drain or you will end up with the same problem since they use the same oil supply

Not an expert on the capacity of the CA but you should replace it with 80/90EP GL-5 gear lube. You could dump some diesel fuel down it to wash out some sludge. Don't forget to check the final drive pans. Should be a filler plug on the inside of each. You have to drop the pans to drain them and replace the gaskets. Not sure but they also may take about a quart of gear lube or fill till it runs out the fill hole. Mike
