Got this D-17 and I keep getting water in the tank. The tank is one with the fuel gauge on the back end of the tank. Is it maybe leaking into the tank from there or is there maybe another place that the D-17 had problems with water in the fuel tank. This is a gas burner by the way around a 1961.
Thanks
By the way I have put in a bottle of heat in the tank twice now and still keep haveing the problem

If you are having lots of water in the gas, you are being sold bad gas. Find a different station. I know this is so based on experince of my gas lines freezing up three times last winter dispite completely draining and refilling with fresh gas. Even the old truck froze up. Changed stations, no more problems. Although, it is common for gas to have a small amount of water dissolved in it anyway. If the tractor sets a while the water will separate and sink to the bottom of the tank based on it's higher density.

Nope its not the gas. I use a 40 gal. tank to haul my gas in and use from it for all my tractors and this D-17 is the only one with the problem so it can't be the gas. I think I have the problem fixed or at least a way worked around the problem by puttin in a differant sediment bowl assembly that has a pipe that sticks up 1/2 inch above the bottom of the tank. That way the water stays in the bottom and the good gas gets to the carb.

I spose that you know that the gasget is available for the fuel guage, but the studs can be a bear to get out.

Old, I had the same problem with a WD a few years back. Got to checking into it and hadpin holes rusted through the top of the tank. Never would have believed it if I hadn"t seen it myself. God Bless.

If you are not keeping the tank full of fuel it is probably condensation. I"ve got a D19 and I"ve had some trouble also on cool nights then warm days. You should be able to drain the water out of your sediment bowl. If condensation is not the problem I would suspect around the filler neck. If it was not leaking gas around the fuel guage water shouldn"t leak in.

Its not condensation or leaking at the filler neck. I don't put enough gas in it to know if it would leak gas out the fuel gauge. This is one I just started working on and have got it up and running but right now it gets some much water in the fuel you can't run it more then 2 or 3 minutes and the sediment bowl is full of water. When I first started messing with it I pulled the sediment bowl assembly out of the tank and drained about 5 gal. of water out of the tank.

That is a lot of water. It could also be leaking around the seam of the fuel tank. I am assuming the tractor stays outside and you are recieving some rain (here in AR we are dry.) Also, and this sounds silly, check the tank that you are filling out of. They can also have water in them. I know that seems obvious to check but I can speak from experience that some people (me)overlook the simple things.

Hope this helps good luck

Well I use the same tank to fill my other tractor and none of them have the water problem so I know its not from that tank. I have 30 plus tractors so Ya I know what I'm doing this one is just being a problem. From every thing I can see on the fuel tank the only place that could be leaking is the fuel gauge that bolts to the end of the tank. I have sealed it, today with silicone and I'll see if that has stopped the problem.
