My father just recently bought a D15 Series II. When you use the hand clutch in the "neutral" middle position the tractor still wants to move. If you have the tractor in 4th it will stop but you can tell the clutch is still dragging it just doesn't have enough friction to produce the torque needed for 4th gear. You can stop the tractor in any gear buy applying the brakes.

How serious of problem is this? Can we simply make an adjustment somewhere to fix this?

I'm about to get a manual for it but don't have it yet.

You advice is appreciated.

The operation instructions for d-15 Series 2 says : Adjustment power Director Clutch
The clutch lever quadrant must be adjusted so that it will hold the clutch lever in neutral position so that both ranges of clutch is released equally. This can be checked by holding the release button depressed, and moving the lever slightly forward and rearward between the start of engagement of both ranges and adjust lever quadrant to hold lever exactly half way between the two clutch engagements.
The holes in quadrant are slotted. To adjust, loosen two nuts and move quadrant forward or rearward to the desired position and retighten nuts.

I'll have to take some time and try that out. This could be the reason it's jumped out of HI range a couple of time on us.

Yes, as others have said, it will still pull when in the middle notch. But indeed it should weaken when hot and you should not have to REALLY stand on the brakes or it probably does need adjusting. A shop manual is invaluable - you can order from this site I believe.

I believe that the hand clutch is adjustable by removing or adding shims to one side or another. I cannot explain in detail how to do it--never done it before myself. You should be able to find a good explanation by searching this website or the unofficial Allis Chalmers website.

Enjoy the tractor! The D-15s make excellent utility tractors, and will run a brush hog very well. When you get into the thick stuff, you can just slow to a crawl with the hand clutch--very handy! Does yours have the factory 3 point hitch? Good luck!

Thanks for the tip.

It is a 1966 D15 Series II with factory 3 pt. It also has an Allis 443 (I think) loader on that seems to work good. It needs a few things but we're pretty excited about getting and look forward to using it.

Most of them will pull a little in neutral until the fluid gets hot, usually if they are adjusted right, they will stop when warm.

they all do that...its not a ''clutch'' per se as you dont use it to shift gears in the transmission...also it runs in oil so it should release a lil better when tractor gets up to operating temps.

You hardly even notice when you go from low range to neutral and in R, 1, 2 and even 3 you REALLY have to hammer on the brakes to get her to stop.

We are aware that it's simply a final drive clutch not a transmission clutch.
