I'm just getting started on getting my dad's 1939 B running. He said he thinks it needs a carb kit. Should I just get one or start testing first? How can I tell what kind and model of carb is on it?

Kevin, the little brass disc rivoted on top by the fuel inlet should give the model # and a build date code. Carefully clean the tag with a stainless tooth brush if you have one. They burnish brass real nice without destroying it. The tag I have in front of me has a 6 digit # around the edge (date) and 4 # + a letter, next to the rivot (model). Sometimes, the date code is just month/year. I have found "Castrol Super Cleaner" and "Right Stuff" to work very well for disolving the old varnish and gunk off these old carbs. I just pour the cleaner into a plastic bucket and let the parts soak a few hours, wash with hot water, and dry. Those cleaners will clean and etch brass and aluminum parts quickly, so do NOT leave br & al in over nite or for days. Iron & steel parts CAN soak for days--good to clean varishy engine parts too. Also strips paint on a long soak. It won't do any thing for rust and corrosion though. These old carbs allways seem to have rust in them, that flakes off later, so I blast at least the inside of the carb after I get all the jets and the varnish out. Seems like I have less fuel problems later. If you don't have blast access, the local NAPA probably wouldn't beat you up too badly to bead blast the inside. Also, if the little drive screw that holds the tag on, protrudes thru to the inside, I tap it back and carefully remove the tag till after blasting. Or cover with duct tape if you have to. You don't want to damage that info while blasting, might need it some day. Hope this helps, DARDAN

Thats good info to know! I'm going to clean it up and put it back together with Permatex to see if I can get it to run. The carburetor that was on it was from a Leroy compressor, so That wasn't very good news. I can get a kit for it for $44 but I'd rather save the money and get a new carb... or wait for a used one to show up on Ebay.

Kevin, Skip the Permatex! If you mean the blackish-brown stuff. That black stuff is just too much work later, to clean off! A SMALL dab of silicone gasket maker rubbed on the mounting gasket(both sides), is all you should need. If you intend to clean it up and try it without the rebuild, you can make a temporary body gasket out of a file folder. I would not be too concerned if the carb has been substituted, as these old tractors are pretty forgiving. IF the carb castings are sound, a delux carb kit will include the right throttle shaft and small parts to make even a cheat carb work OK without cost of a commercal rebuilt or new--$200-300. Those jets are marked for size identification. I have a book that lists the jets for MOST of the carb models, if you need to compare what you have with what you need. One warning about carb kits: there are kits and there are kits. Try to compare the contents if possible, as price does not neccessarily reflect completness of the kits. A good kit should have: all gaskets and washers, throttle shaft, choke shaft, screws for the shafts, seals for the shafts, and fuel inlet needle & seat. Jets are an unlikly bonus. A little of the super cleaner and GENTLE brushing and you old float will probably look like new. You are welcome to more info on these carbs if you want/need it. DARDAN

It is a Zenith but the kit shown have two different Zeniths listed "Carburetor Kit, Basic - FOR ZENITH CARBS 9705, 9706 OR ALLIS CHALMERS CARBS 212845-2, 212844-2 For B, C, RC. (Part No: BK22V)" AND "Carburetor Kit, Basic - FOR ZENITH Carburetor 10698A OR ALLIS CHALMERS Carburetor 212845 For B, C, RC. (Part No: BK21AV)".

Mine has B13 stamped below the "Zenith made in U.S.A." on the bottom of the bowl "Zenith is stamped on top of the carb at the air intake. The only other making is a bunch of numberes on a round copper or brass tag on top of the carb.

When you clean the grunk off the outside of carb you should also be able to see the carb maker's name cast into the lower bowl if Zenith, mounting flange if Marvel Shebler.

You should find a tag on the back side of the carb giveing you the numbers you need to get a kit. If it has sat for very long it most likely will need a kit and also it wouldn't hurt to put a 1/4 cup of tranny fluid in the cylinder just to help loosen up the rings and prelube the engine

There was a copper or brass disk riveted to the top of the carb with numbers on the outer and inner edge. the outer numbers are: 84 548 41 and the inner numbers are 12326. I talked to a guy in parts and he said that he couldn't reference any of those numbers but the brass disk is the id tag.

Well it looks like my carb came from a Leroy compressor... according to the carb shop guy. Now should I rebuild it and put it back on the tractor or get the right carb? The guy at www.thecarburetorshop.com said I should get the right one... but he didn't have one.

All depends on how much you want to spend on it. You can get a rebuilt carb from value bilt for $211, plus shipping or you can also get one from this site. Hers a list of carbs that could have been on it or will fit it. 9705, 9706, 9804, TSX154, TSX305, or 12522. All of those are carbs that came on B/Cs when new

The one carb guy told me it was originally a 8561, but I thought that it could have been one of many ... maybe 8561 was for 1939 model "B"?

I'm cleaning the carburetor up that was on it and putting it back together with Permatex gasket maker and going to see if I can get it to run.

Don't use that gasket sealer it will #1 not work and #2 will clog things up real good if you try. If you can't find a kit or gaskets make you own gasket out of gasket paper. You can buy that stuff at any good auto parts store
