All our plows had that type of hitch, takes a round clevis to attach to tractor. I can remember watching dad plow when I was a kid, he hit a small rock or something and the plow disconnected from the tractor, dad didn't notice untill he got to the end of the field and went to grab for the trip rope to lift the plow, expression on his face was priceless.

I've seen lots of these on turn over plows - all sizes. They were very similar in design regardless of the manufacturer. The function was to separate the plow from the tractor if the plow hit an immovable object such as a large rock or a tree stump. This action prevented tractor rearing and tip over.
