Magneto or distributor?

I'm putting in a D17 motor into my Wd45 gas. The D17 power plant came with a magneto which quit throwing spark. I've put the WD45 distributor on the unit for now. Should I get the magneto repaired or stay with the distributor? Will I loose any power this way?

I like mags better myself. But if you have a weak one it will give you a lot of aggrivation. The one question I have is, that's an International mag? I'm not sure, but I thought IH mags had a different lag angle on the impulse than an AC. Do not remember for sure but if so, it will effect your ignition timming. Maybe some IH guy knows better than me on this. AC used a 30 degree lag angle.

If its the H4 IH mag, they use 35 degree lag angle
on IH tractors and parts are still available. Hal

A magneto on a D17? That don't sound right. I think Allis Chalmers had gone to using distributors from the WD45 on. Right or wrong, inquiring mind wants to know.

This engine came from a portable pumping station that the Farm Bureau kept inside in case of emergency and would haul it to a spot to pump water. Very low hours and the high compression pistons. I thought I was buying a WD45 engine until I got there and looked at the serial #.

See that answers a lot of questions since the engine was set up as a power plant not as a tractor so thats why it had a mag on it.

Both the WD45 and the D17 came with a distributor ignition- not a magneto. Distributor ignition is a much better starting system.

That mag probably only needs the points cleaned with some 320 wet or dry. Take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean them several times.
Then snap that impulse coupling after someone pulls the coil wire from the cap and holds the coil wire near a good ground on the mag. Should have a good hot spark. That mag can be converted to a distributor too.

If there's no spark after cleaning the points is to pull the cap over the coil and remove the coil to the side. Don't disconnect the wires. Take a flatblade screwdriver and touch those magnets. They should attract that screwdriver with a lot of effort. They sometimes lose their magnetism
and your magnets are what creates the spark when they pass by the coil. If there's very little
magnetism it will probably never fire. Don't discard the mag since you can convert the mag to a distributor. Here's a picture of a mag converted. You would still use the points and condenser in the mag. Hal

Either one will work just fine and have the same power or so close you will not notice a differance. On advantage to haveing a mag is the fact you can still start it with a dead battery but other then that there pretty much the same

I'd replace the points in the distributor with electronics.
