D17 hydraulic issue

My father-in-law asked me (a Ford guy) about his D-17 problem. It seems the hydraulic fluid is leaking from the hyd. resevoir into the rearend when using the tractor. He was thinking the pump has a seal on it that"s leaking by into the tranny.

From reading the archives, it seems there is a hose going to the lift cylinder which is located under the rocker arm cover that is known to blow, and seems a more likely source for this problem. Is that the general concensus?

I"m waiting for an IT manual I just ordered for him, just wondering what he"s getting me into fixing this thing for him. Any issue"s pulling the rocker arm cover that one should know about? I"m thinking about pulling it to check out what"s going on to rule that out, before getting into worrying about the pump inself.

I had the same problem on my D17. Two or three lifts and all the hydraulic fluid was in in the rear axel. The problem for me was the seals on the lift cylinder. The parts cost was about $20. I think you need an engine hoist for the job. I had one and it was still tough to do.

The other possibility is the hose that connects to the lift cylinder. If this is bad, you might not be able to lift much but the fluid will transfer as well. The repair is just as difficult.

Problem could be 2 things...(not the pump)
If it's a FAST leak or transfer of fluid out of the hydraulics to the rear end, the problem is likely a bad hose. If it's a SLOW leak, the seals in the lift cylinder are bad.
Either will require removal of the lift arm housing. Have a cherry-picker or other hoist available as those things are heavy.

The housing is bolted to the differential & there are (2) alignment dowels. I've had to use a large chisel and 2# hammer to get them to seperate.

In addition to what you find to be the source of the leak, you'll need a new gasket where the housings meet. Use Permatex#2 for gasket sealant.
Might not hurt to replace the PTO shaft seal while you've got it apart.

BTW, use only an OEM hose from AGCO if that's what needs to be replaced.
