my friend has a g and had it rebuilt, new pistons etc. ever since then it wont start with starter unless you pull it, i beleive i read something about shims behind harmonic balancer causing the problem when you snug it up. i am going to check it out. he thinks its high compression, but i dont beleive thats the problem. any help appreciated. reputable machine shop did the rebuild but dont think they know that much about a g eng.

has 6 volt battery with the 6 volt cables, the motor turns very hard like its bound up. read somewhere about wrong shims behind the pully.

You would need to pull the crankshaft timing gear off and remove shims from behind the gear to free it up if that is your problem. The crankshaft pulley bottoms out on the end of the crankshaft and pushes the timing gear tight against the shims. That in turn tightens the tolerance on the thrust washers. You could cut a small .002 shim to place in the bottom of the crankshaft pulley and see if that would relieve the pressure from the thrust washers. If it helped it would save taking the timing cover off.
That little 9 horse engine does not turn over hard when everything is new with the correct tolerances.

If the shims don't make the starting any easier you make need to take a look at the rod and main bearings and plasti-gage them. They may have the clearances too tight. Hal

If this tractor still has the 6 volt system it should have 00 copper battery cables. Hal
