One of my hydraulic cylinders is leaking from what appears to be a breather hole. How hard of a repair is this. I"ve read the service manual and it doesn"t seem like there is much to the cylinders but I"ve never tore into one before.

I beleive there were two cylinder designs on these tractors, original ones had a smaller diamter rod than the cylinder bore and the later ones had the rod the same diameter as the bore. I replaced the seals on my D17 Series IV last fall that had the style with the rods smaller than the bore.

The hydraulic hoses have swivels connectors at the cylinder and come off fairly easy. Then you have some I believe pin clips that hold the pins in each end to remove. Once you have the cylinder off the tractor, you'll need to mount it on something VERY sturdy. You might actually want to pin the bore end to the drawbar hole. Then you need the right size face pin spanner wrench to unscrew the end cap. Looks like two pieces of flat metal with a hinge and two small pins on each end to fit in the holes. Expect to use a big cheater bar on that wrench.

Oncy you unscrew the end cap, pull the whole rod assembly out of the bore. You then use the face pin spanner wrench to unscrew the internal nuts holding the packing in. Take care to note exactly how the packing rings are stacked and what direction they mount before taking it apart. Check the cylinder bore for any scratch or scoring that can leak around the packing seals. Polish any scratches if you can. If they look too deep it might be time to find a good used cylinder. The packing seal kits are about $60 each from AGCO.

Assembly is the reverse. You'll also replace the cylinder rod wiper that part of the seal kit before screwing stuff back together. You'll want to remount the cylinder fully collapsed and leave the hydraulic hose a bit loose and slowly raise the lift arms and let the oil bleed out a bit to get all the air out before tighening it down.
