Allis Chalmers WD-45 gear box knock

I have been working on my grampas old wd and it has developed a heavy knock in the gearbox directly under the battery. The knock stops when the foot clutch in depressed but returns again when the clutch is let out again. The hand clutch has no effect on the knock. Recently we changed the spring clip that the hand clutch works with because it had gotten bent and came off. I am not sure it got caught somewhere and caused the knock or if the two are unrelated.

Since the hand clutch does not affect the sound but the foot clutch does (I'm assuming this test was run in neutral), the knock can not be coming from either the transmission or the differential. Three areas remain. The hand clutch itself. If something is broken on the hand clutch, it could be slapping on the case. The second place is the hydraulic system. If you have a stuck piston in the pump, it can make quite a racket. Make sure you have enough fluid in the reservoir. The third spot would be the gearing and box for the PTO. Run a few more tests - engaged - disengaged - report back the results. May be able to determine which is the difficulty before disassembly of everything.
