Low oil pressure

I'm going to look at a C this Saturday. The guy told me it has low oil pressure, around 15 lbs. he said this is normal for AC, is this true? Used to have a WD40 on the farm when I was a kid but I don't remember anything about low oil pressure. He bought it from the county, where he lives , and swapped the motor out. So, I'm somewhat concerned. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds normal for oil pressure. In the 125 cid engine, the camshaft drives the oil pump and acts as a gallery as it is hollow. There are holes in it that line up with the connecting rods which spray oil at the holes in the rod ends. The oil goes through the cambearings to the block to the mains and rockers and oil filter. As long as the engine oils the rockers, and doesn't knock, It should have enough pressure to live. It depends more on volume than pressure. Hope this helps, Brian

The C & B engines pumps the oil to the top of the engine through and over the rocker arms, some over the timeing gears (not all) and through the main bearings only. The rod bearings get oil from the rods splashing in the oil in the pan. This is why they can run on the lower oil presure. Loose rod bearings will not show up in low oil presure. Put a screwdriver to the pan and listen for knocks. The other posts tell you how the gauge should read. Hope this helps.

Sounds about right. my ACs all hold around 15 to 20. a little less at idle.

All of the original A-C manuals state that the oil pressure gauge should read near the "R" or "M" in the word normal. A little less when at idle. My I & T Manual says that the normal oil pressure for the WC-WD-WD-45 & WF is 12 lbs. Since the B-C & CA use the same gauge, I assume 12 lbs is correct for them as well. I have a WD that reads in the middle of the gauge at idle when hot and 2/3 at governed speed. I have a WD-45 that barely gets up to the "N" at full speed when hot. From what I read here, a lot of A-C tractors run for years with practically no oil pressure. Many people don't know that a lot of older engines run at much lower pressure than modern engines. So..... it sounds like you may have a solid bottom end in that "C" you're looking at.
