Hello, I'm looking at a D17 & was wondering if these Tractors have a good reputation or not. What might be a good price on it? It has a loader on it, fair rubber & wide frontend. Gas engine & 4 speed transmission. Need a tractor to move round bales & clean-up after horses. Thank you, Rusty

thank you for all your replies. They want 5 grand for the tractor. The loader is a bit big for it but woild work. I believe he likes the tractor to much. Oh well I'll just keep looking.

Well if the loader runs off the tractor hyds they can be a pain to use because the early ones didn't have live hyds so if you push the clutch down you can't use the loader. They do have lie PTO by useing the hi/low lever. Some of the early ones had a few tranny problem and jumped out of gear. But all in all not a bad 52HP tractor

I have to agree. I've got two D17s, a series one and a series three. A good rugged, dependable tractor. Never let me down.

BTW, what kind of loader does the one you are looking at have, full hydraulics or a trip bucket? The D17 is a very well balanced tractor weight-wise, though you will have to keep an eye on the front end. And they are two wheel drive, which can be somewhat of a pain when doing loader work.

Before you agree to buy it, see if the owner will allow you to do some good hard work with it for about a half hour or so. My series I has a rear engine seal which is leaking, but it doesn't start leaking until the machine is good and warmed up from actual work. I need to work on the clutch sometime this summer, so I'll probably fix that seal while I've got it split.

As to a good price, I would say $2500 or 3000 in this part of Missouri would be decent without a loader. The loader is sort of a wild card. Take a good look at it and try to use it before buying. A decent loader, fully hydraulic, no cracks, and a front end that has not been abused, might add perhaps $1000 or 1500 to what I would be willing to pay.

Overall a good tractor.

Christopher

I agree with Chris. $2500 to $3000 is what GOOD series 1-3 D17"s are bringing. I series 4 is worth another thousand or so. However if it has any problems, this is too much money. Transmission popping out if gear is a $1000 deduction in my area. Worn out tires are about a $500 deduction. Rusted out fenders and generally poor tin work is a $500 deduction. However even a D17 with a stuck engine and who knows what condtion the transmission is in, and with practically no tires at all will still fetch $1000 or a tad more. So you can`t take all deductions on the same tractor and expect them to pay you to take it. As for the loader: if it is a full hydraulic loader in good shape and has it`s own pump, then you are looking at a $1000 and up to $1500. If it is a trip bucket loader, and unless it is really in top notch shape, bucket and all, the loader is worth between $100 and $150. $200 dollars tops for one already on the tractor so you can see it working. There area lots and lots of D17 gas tractors in the world, just because they are one of the greatest tractors of the period, don`t get caught over paying, if you do, a better one is sure to come along next week for a lot less money... Murphys law.

I agree with John totally. I have a Series II diesel and I won't part with it period.

There are some that pop out of 2nd or 3rd gears. Check to make sure yours won't have that problem.

A D17 in good condition is one of the handiest all around tractors that there is. I have a series IV that is especially good because it has full time hydraullics and a 3PTH. THey are easy to work on a parts are readily available from AGCO, the after market and parts machines are abundant.
