Contaminated gear lube in B

While parked facing up hill, saw that developed a slight leak at the seal of the rear PTO, and saw some contamination (water, mositure) mixed in the gear lube that I figure got in through the shifter boot during a good hose down. Ok, pulled both drain plugs and drained, and really should"ve just let it set over night and really drained, but jumped the gun and refilled 8 quarts...or whatever the measurement is these days. Ok, saw some more leaking now that is refilled, and still saw some contamination. Next weekend when am home, will repeat draining and refill with another 8 quarts. Question that I have is that I"ve heard some say that they"ve added the likes of kerosene to thin the lube out and break down any comtamination just before a short run and then draining and refilling. Good idea? Bad idea? I want to get it out, and I don"t want to damage any other seals with either contamination or kerosene. In any event, this time will set overnight with the drain plugs out. Thanks.

open and clean as Dick said... then refill with hydraulic-trans fluid, not gear lube. you can get a 2 gallon bucket at Wal Mart for $15. this is a 20 wt type oil and will do a better job of getting to the upper bearings.also a must if you hae a hydraulic system on it.

I remember somone once saying in the past...30 weight, and thought to go back into the archives and recheck but said, naw...has to be gear lube. Well, I certainly am going to be doing some house cleaning this weekend, that's for sure. Thanks. Wealth of knowledge on orange here.

Like I said On the other board. If your transmission had as bad of contamination as it sounded the oil cup for the short shaft and roller bearings will be full of crap and all the pore in and drain out in the world will not clean that cup. You will need to take the side plate off and fashion a dipper of some type to clean it out and if the center of the short shaft is plugged the bearings still can not get any lubrication. The transmission in the picture was plugged and so was the short shaft. I had to use a small drill to unplug the center. If it were mine and I wanted to keep it for any time I would pull all the gears out as soon as I could and get the inside clean. third party image

Thanks Dick. Off the side cover comes. I"m not home now, but recognize the filler hole in the side of the case in your photos, and can visualize the gears into the transmission. The cup...I"ll have to open it up. Thanks again, gear lube was pretty bad. She"s an old girl that still works kind of harder than she should after all of her years, but so long as she"s up to it...no use telling her she"s too old to excerise.

You need to drain the tranny, rear end and PTO or you will have the same problem. I can;t remember right now but there maybe one other drain plug you also need to pull. And yes its a good idea to pull them all then let it sit over night.

Thanks Old. There are two drain plugs. One under the rear which sets lower than the trans, and there's one under the trans because there's a baffle at the back of the trans that keeps it from draining when you pull the plug for the rear. That baffle is low enough though that when you fill the rear that it flows down into the trans and fills it. I didn't see a 3rd drain plug. I will let it set overnight for sure. Don't want to damage anything, and gear lube is $3.95 a quart at the local auto parts. I don't want to do that too many times if I don't have to.

Theres also one in the PTO houseing which works offf the other 2. And if you have hyds it use all 3 for the fluid

Drain, refill with diesel or kero, drive around gently (no load or sudden stop/go)for a few minutes (WITHOUT ENGAGING PTO IF you have hydraulics) to try to wash contamination out of corners. Drain all the plugs on the belley behind the clutch. If I remeber there is 1 in the trans and 1 on the differential case and 1 on the PTO. Let drain ovenight then refill.
