I've got an Allic C, converted to 12 volt, with distributor, coil, and two wire alternator. Suddenly I have no resistance between my two batteries cables, so I apparently have a major short that has drained my battery and almost melted my jumper cables when I tried to hop it with my car. Apart from frayed positive side wires grounding out, etc., are there any other common culprits? Shorts within the alternator, starter, etc.? I plan on rewiring the whole machine but I'd like to get one more mow out of it this fall.

I think if you melted a set of jumpers, theres a bare spot on the pos cable. If it were any where else, the wires would be vaporized. I've never heard of the rectifier in an alt providing a direct short to ground. If it did, the heat would quickly burn up the diode, opening the circuit. If you have any trouble rewiring, just ask. Brian
