Hand clutch shifting collar on WD

I am trying to change the shifting collar on the hand clutch on a WD for an 88 yearold friend without splitting the tractor. Looks like if I drive the brakeshaft over and drop the brake peddles the hand clutch shaft should slide out. I have 2 set screws or bolts removed but I can't get the brake shaft to move. I bought an I.T. manual just for this but it is not much help. Am I missing something or do I need to get a little rougher with it. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

I guess I am missing something. I will be going to work on it Tues Or Wed. It looked like the brake peddels are in the way. The I.T manual has it broke down in a good picture but it just shows te clutch it doesn't show the brakes. Does the clutch shaft have to come out the side of the brakes? It looks like it does to me because of the handle. I will look a lot closer at it. The bad part is I don't think it has ever been washed and that makes it hard to tell what is what. I pressure wash mine before I start anything. I should of took it over and washed this one. Thanks for the replies if I run into any stumps I may email you guys direct if that is ok.

I changed one of those, and didn't have to split the tractor. Get a parts manual. It has a clearer breakdown and is a big help. I didn't have to mess with the brake at all. Are you sure you don't mean the clutch handle or the shifter lever?

Jeff, the last time I did this repair was in June 1997. I did not have to mess with the brakes at all when I changed mine. I do believe that I had to pull out the shifter shaft. I did have one advantage. I made the new collar. I may have modified it to permit reassembly. I don't have the tractor anymore - sold it to a friend who still has it. But it would be very hard to find out if I had to do anything unusual to get out that shaft - such as drilling a hole in the side channel frame. Sorry that I can't help more. Hopefully someone has a more recent experience.
