I just got a 7040 (red belly) with power director. This tractor has been sitting for 10 years, overall has not had much use for such a powerhouse.I changed fluids & filters. It cranks and runs like new,was parked because trans would not shift out of low.The tractor has orig 4 post ROPS & canopy,no cab. I have replaced the shift cable and it still is in low,try to go into high and it goes into park.I am wondering wheather to remove the top cover where the shifter goes into trans or just live with it? Also the 3 point would not raise,I was trying to adjust linkage,it went up and now wont come down? Lastly there is a leak where the hydraulic pump mates to trans. Is there a seal there or what? Any help on any of this would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Steve

There are 2 shift cables. One forward and back, the other sideways. Take floor off, shifting lever coming out of transmission is under your left heel once seated. See that it moves sideways when you move shift sideways. Check cables are not seized. Take side off console and you'll see where the other end of the shift cable connects, and how it works. These cables will seize from just sitting or even dirt.

Hydraulic pumps coming out of front of rear end under transmission, drain all oils, drain plugs both axels, centre rear end, two in transmission, retangular plate just behind pumps, 8 or 10 bolts. I think you'll get about 20 gallons of oil. Oil will still be dripping -- it's a dirty mess -- but a straight-forward job. Remove all lines. There are three pumps stacked. I think two bolts -- remove first bolt, gasket or silicone will seal this to gear pump. Triangle plate mounted to housing three bolts -- remove other two pumps. There are oh rings around rear rotor pump. Can't remember what seals between centre and rear. Can be figured out when removing.

Three point hitch -- Try adding some weight to it, ie. another tractor with loader putting downpressure on three-point hitch lift arms. Mine got stiff from lack of use. A few trips up and down it worked fine. If this doesn't fix it could be a sticking valve, I don't know where to look.

I've had mine since '86. Paid $6,500 at an auction. Done a lot of work. It's been a GREAT tractor!!

Lotsa Luck
Tim
