Does the exhaust manifold have some sort of pipe extension coming out of the manifold to clamp the muffler to? My recent purchase has the muffler literally sitting on top of the manifold with about 2 inches of the muffler pipe down inside of the manifold. Naturally, it leaks. There are no threads inside the manifold. When the tractor is in operation, the muffler shakes back and forth and makes some ugly noises. How can I tighten it? Any advice will be appreciated.

to install the underhood muffler, you must insert a square head bolt through the hole in the manifold, from the inside out.put a nut on the outside, slide in the muffler and tighten the nut.

That is what I have, the underhood muffler. I have never seen such a contraption. I could not figure out why the exhaust manifold had no threads. I will take care of it tomorrow. Thanks everyone!

The picture below shows what I do to all of my manifolds. It takes a 1 1/4" tapered pipe tap. I screw in a 1 1/4" threaded pipe or a cut off pipe nipple. I buy a muffler that fits over the pipe nipple or I have taken a muffler to a muffler shop that has the bending and expanding equipment and have the end expanded to fit over the pipe.

Dick is right about the tap size and size of pipe for the manifold.

I have a 41C that I did the exact thing to many yeaes ago and have not one time had any problems.
