Just a question, not a problem. I have a late 51 or early 52 WD. Been years since I checked the numbers and I don't remember which it is. Anyway it has the straight shifter so I'm sure it has the square cut gear tranny. Third gear is always a bit tricky to get to go in. Seems like it's hard to find the right spot, but once you do it shifts right in. Never pops out of any gear. No loud or bad noises, just tricky. Other gears are a piece of cake to shift into. Is this just the nature of the beast?

I believe that it is the nature of the beast. We have a '51 WD, and both third and fourth gears require a deliberate shift to get there. The tractor is seldom run in those gears, as our property is small. Once engaged, the gears are secure. We had to build up the shifter tip last year, and third was the worst for getting lost beforehand. I think that it takes the most leverage to engage. Hard to say what it was like new, as I was scarcely born.

I would say its just the nature of it. I know on my WC Speed patrol 3rd is hard to find and its also hard to find on both my WD and my WD45. 3rd is just plan a pain to find some times. What I do most of the time is go to 4th then back to 3rd and it goes in easy but to go right to 3rd you play with it for a little bit. Some how with it being between 1st and back-um-up its just plain hard to find that sweet spot
