Allis hand clutches

Had a guy tell me today about the hand clutches being called "suicide clutches" as during heavy pulling, the front end of the tractor would come off the ground. Operator would throw the hand clutch forward and it did nothing, thus the tractor flipped. He said many people were killed that way. Is this so? Im a young guy and know little about history of AC.

Yeah, I never had heard of such a thing, and even then, there is the foot clutch too. I didnt question him since he was like 40 years older than me, and might have been kidding or just to get a reaction from my friend and I.

Pulling scrap metal out of a pile on the farm, I have had the front end of the WD start to lift, and the hand clutch has remedied the situation every time. However, there are cases where the hand clutch has worn, and instead of fixing it, some guys have made solid adapter to replace the wet clutch. This is very dangerous, and suicidal in several repects. Better to learn to split or stretch the tractor and do proper repair on the wet clutch.

As a matter of fact, Allis offered a "knockout" device for the hand clutch on the WD. I have one. An ingenious little device that slams the handclutch forward if the plow hits a rock. Any sudden stoppage of a drawn implement will cause that to happen but it's mainly designed for plowing. Works instantaneously.

Sounds more like the guy grab the hand clutch and instead of pushing it forward he kept pulling back on it which of course would keep it pulling. I know I have never had any problems like that with any of my Allis tractor that have the hand clutch

Thats the first I ever heard of that. I will admit to trying to pull more than I should with a WD and having the front end come off the ground and pushing hand clutch forward and it stopped every time.

Nevetr heard of such a thing in this area. Sounds like a careless operaytor to me.
