on a stuck engine, I hear that a person should put transmission fluid in the cylinders and leave them soak. Does it make a difference what type of transmission fluid I use?

thanks for your help.
Dave

I don't know that it matters which type you use. My self I always use dextron 3 but thats because its also what goes into my wifes car. That way I have it for her when she needs it. I fill the cylinders and also pour some in the exhaust becasue most of the time a stuck engine is caused by water getting into that one cylinder that was open to the air from the exhaust. U have one soaking at this time but it maybe one I have to open up more to get freed up but if so thats still not to bad since out or 20 plus engine it will only be the 2nd one I have had to open up

I know this question sould foolish but how long does it normally take to break the engine free using transmission fluid?

All depends on how bad its stuck. I've had some that popped free after a couple hours of soaking and others that took a few days. One way to check how its going is after you fill the cylinders, to the top so no more can be added. Then go back say 5 hours later and check, if the fluid has gone down in all the cylinders there a good bet you can then pull all the plugs and hook up a battery, I use 12 volts for more power, that it will pop free. If the lever hasn't gone down jsut wait longer. Now if the level never goes down then it may or may not come free. I have a JD 1010 that soaked for a week and one cylinder never did go down any and I now have the head off of it and its not going to come free with out pulling the engine aprt. But it did alos have the exhaust open to the weather which is very bad news for an engine

Hello Dave. The best tool I have in my shop are the archives remaining on this website. On the home page go to discussion forums and then view archives. You'll find a million ways to free a stuck engine. You just have to pick one that makes the most sence too you, and that is the safest for your skill level. Good luck!
