Help, I'm kind of new at working on my tractor but willing to try, I took out the shifter to have it rebuilt but I'm not sure how it goes back in. Not sure of how to line up forks and gears. Should the lower gear be pushed bacck or foward. Have a IT manual but does'nt tell how to install. I know there's a trick to it. If anyone knows where I can get step-by-step instructions and illistrations ,I would be very greatfull. Thanks ><>

They forks should align with one another when replacing the shift lever. If you're replacing the tower and forks, I find it easier to set the transmission in reverse, as well as the shifter, then lower the assembly into place. Helps when guiding the reverse fork around the gears. If the tower and forks are installed, just reach in with a long screwdriver to align forks, then drop the shifter into place.

How does the shifter look inside the tower when in reverse? I keep ending up in 2 gears at same time foward and reverse .

If the shifter is in the tower, and you shift it into reverse, the shifter will be to the right and to the rear, while the extreme left fork will be forward.

Whent to the Allis dealer todayto get help. The service guy showed me how to put the shifter into 2nd gear(you have to clamp it in a vise to shift it). The shifter arm should be in the slot with the shield attached to it. Keep shifter in second gear position. Next line up the 2nd gear in the trans all the way foward to engage in 2nd, line up smaller gear below it in line with 2nd gear above. Front gear should be about centered between gears so it is in a neutral position and spin freely. This lines the gears up with the forks on the shifter and will allow it to drop straight down on gear collars,Be careful to take it slow and not to be out of line when lowering the shifter or it will knock the lower gear out of line and into reverse causing it to be in 2 gears (foward and reverse).Use a flashlight to watch as you lower it down and remember not to let the shifter out of the 2nd gear position as you let it down Hold on to the shifter down close to the case with one hand and the other on the bottom will help. It took me ten minuites to do it by myself after fighting it all week. Sure helps to get an old pro's advise Thanks to the serviceman at Steinke's Tractor,Eaton Ohio Im now back on the roll. They also rebuilt my shifter and it works fantastic. Hope this helps others out, Wd-45 forever John Deer Never!
