Hello all,

When I place my "51 WD in 4th gear, it does not click in like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But it does not jump out, it just fools me into thinking that it is not engaged, so I let the clutch out expecting it to jump out of gear or strip them, but it never does. Should 4th click in like 1st through 3rd, or is 4th tricky on all WD"s?

Chiming in what "John in KC" says about WD45's. My Dad has 2 (54 and 57, if I remember correctly) and you can't catch 3rd gear on one of them unless you push in the clutch and shove the shift lever whlie the input shaft is still spinning. Once it takes, it never "pops out". My guess is it's a shifting fork problem. But if it stays in gear, then it's not worth messing with. Dad's tractor has had this "problem" for 40+ years - we just live with it.

Our '51 WD has not spent much time in 4th gear over the years, and I would describe the feeling of shifting into 4th as similar to yours. We had to build the end of the shifter up with braze a year or two ago, as it lost 4th altogether & occasionally the shifter slipped out of the lower gears. 4th still feels vague compared to 1,2 & R.

I have two 1954 wd 45's. They are both at times difficult to shift into 3rd and one of them does what you are describing in 3rd and 4th gears. Someone once told me that if you try to force it into gear you can bend the (i think they are called shifting forks). Anyway you are not the only one who has this problem, sorry I don't know how to fix it.
