1949 Wd with wd45 engine. Engine spun rod bearing. Tore engine down and found (starting from the front of engine) the first pistons are taller the the back two pistons and the tall pistons are marked P&M with what I would call vent holes behind the oil ring. The other two pistons have smooth dished tops and no vent holes behind the oil ring. The engine block has a sticker that says "power crater"? I assumed the sticker was put on because it came with the decal kit?
Is this piston arrangement normal or do I have some kind of home-
made hybird? I'm very curious plus I need to order parts to get this thing operational again. It is used for pulling a 72" finish mower and plowing snow.

'Power-Crater' pistons, original with the WD45, would have a concave top, as opposed to the flat top pistons in the WD. Is it really a 45 block- ie, no removable panel on the right side? Or the WD block with the 45 crank, to get to 226 ci?

Thanks to all who responed. This is the first time I've ever posted anything. Also, this is the first tractor I've ever owned. I bought the tractor in Nov. 2005. At the time I bought it, it had a spun rod bearing. The tractor was very clean and the original owner indicated it worked great until an external oil line broke and pumped itself out of oil. It started knocking and he shut it off. Long story short, I cleaned up the crank (emery cloth), purchased an oversized bearing from NAPA, plastic gage checked at .002", I lock-tited it in and after replacing the ignition system, freeing up the shift tower and cleaning up rust in the fuel system- I thought I was in tall cotton!
However, once the engine was warm my oil pressure dropped out. The engine never knocked so I mowed approximately 4 acres every week last year, used a grader box to grade my drive 3/4 of mile long with no problems. It was during moving heavy snow with grader box that it started knocking. The crank has since been ground and I plan to completly rebuild the motor. However, the piston thing has thrown me for a loop. By the way I rechecked the tall pistons and they are stamped M&W power maker not P&M like I said earlier. Upon tear down I was very surprised at how clean the engine is...no sludge or other wear outside of the crank, rod bearing and I think I have a stretched rod. Any advise on rebuild would much appreciated. Thanks

Oh yea, I almost forgot...the M&W power maker pistons are concave .

The numbers on the block are 451904G AM3853-5. The number on the crank is 226535. There is no inspection plate on the block. Like I said...Any advice at all is very much appreciated. I have never taken apart an engine in my life. I gained the confidence to rebuild it myself from ready posts on this sight. Also, I do plan on a compllete rebuild and need to order my parts...Thats why I'm trying to understand what I have so I know what to order for replacement.
Thanks from Bargersville, Indiana

The 45 prefix indicates it is a WD-45 engine.
It had a 226 C.I.D. with 4" bore and 4.5" stroke from the factory.
Generally, replacement pistons and sleeves are installed as sets. The stock pistons were "dished". Many replacement sleeves and pistons were 4.125" oversize to give them a little more "umph". If the bores are all the same size and are not excessively worn, you could probably get away with just new pistons and rings; otherwise, I'd go with the complete piston, ring and sleeve set. You can get the parts from many places including Agco, Nappa or even on e-Pay.

The fact it had 2 differant types of pistons in it may have caused it to do what it did. An engine needs to be blanced as in same pistons in all 4 holes of you can even brake a crank shaft. Sounds like you need to get a complete resleeve kit for it to make sure the pistons and bores will all be the same or you will have the same type problem again

Looks like the previous owner used available parts. All four piston should be the same. I haven't ever had apart a WD-45 so don't know the original piston shape. The WD's I've had apart had the smooth dished tops. The compression ratio wasn't that high on the original 45 so higher compression pistons were available. The P&M were probably a couple of these. If it were my tractor, I'd probably buy four new pistons. If horsepower is a problem for the PTO, you might consider M&W for a bit higher compression. I haven't had experience with P&M - probably others have.
