1937 Allis WC won't run without choke 1/2 on

Bought a 1937 Allis WC that would only run with choke on for a short while then die. I rebuilt carb which was very dirty and it runs with choke about 1/2 way on but runs rough. I then noticed some antifreeze coming out by the head gasket on the right side and noticed some sparks coming out from behind the exhaust manifold once in a while. Will a bad head gasket cause the problems I am having?

Check for vacuum leaks with a can of starting fluid, spray where the intake bolts to the head and the carb mounting. If the engine speeds up you have a vacuum leak. If you spray a little starting fluid into the carb when it starts to die and the engine picks back up, you have either a carb or fuel supply problem. Make sure gas is getting to the carb unrestricted. Most likely the main jet orifice is restricted, you should be able to blow compressed air from the needle end all the way through.Put a can of water remover in the gas.

The more I read your description... and note that the tractor runs worse and quits as it warms up, the more I think your problems are related to a valve issue. Take the valve cover off and check all valves. They may be set too tight. As the tractor warms up, the problem would worse. Also check and see that none of the valves are stuck.

Exhaust manifold problem cannot cause this. A plugged air cleaner would not cause this either - it would have the opposite effect. Dirt in the needle valve could cause this. I do think if you had an obstruction there the tractor would not get enough fuel, with or without the choke turned on. This would be more apparent at higher engine speeds or the engine under a load. The more immediate thing that comes to my mind is your float being set too low. The next thing I would look at is a leaky intake manifold gasket. Your head gasket problem concerns me too, but I would look at the two things I mentioned first. They are the easier things to correct.

Just a speck of dirt under the needle valve in the carb will cause more grief then what it looks like it could.

Dirty carburetor or plugged air cleaner can cause this. It is an easy check.

Bad head gasket will cause the leak. Also a bad manifold gasket can cause the problem with it running ruff and haveing to be choked to run.
