i pulled on my starter and nothing happened. checked battery cables, moved them around ect. and it started right up. I have started it 5-6 times since with no problem, but..... 3 days ago it's doing the same thing. i repeat what i did earlier but this time it will only turn once or twice then nothing. I checked my battery and it read ok(8 volt),but a friend told me it probably had a bad cell and since it was 5years old i got a new one..... same result when i installed. I tried to jump it with my truck, same result. I removed the starter, which had been rebuilt 5years ago and had it checked out. the starter guy said it looked ok but I may not be getting a good ground. I reinstalled starter after i checked the ?flywheel to be sure i could turn it,(it turned ok but only one direction?)after i had checked all my grounds. When i reinstall the starter it will turn 1-2 times then only electrical sounds. I'm at a dead end. any help GREATLY appreciated. I've owned tractor for 10 years, it was rebuilt 3 years ago and has run great till now .

Have you checked the contacts in the switch at the starter? I'd pull the switch off and check for badly pitted contacts that make only intermittent electrical contact. You can clean them up and file them smooth to assure better contact.

Old is correct. I was referring to the switch on the starter itself. The switch housing is attached to the starter body by two small screws. Remove the battery cable and the starter rod. Then remove those screws to remove the housing and gain access. You probably will have to remove the starter from the tractor to remove both screws. Inside the switch housing is a solid copper bar that makes electrical connections at either end. One end contacts the stud that your battery cable is attached to and the other end contacts a stud in the starter body. Arcing and pitting occurs at these two contact points. Over time, this can result in less than satisfactory connections and intermittent operation of the starter. If you are pretty sure that your ground connections are good, these switch contact points should be inspected and cleaned up. If the condition is very bad, a replacement switch might be in order.

Insdie the part that your starter rod goes to theres a set of contacts that after years of starting get bad and need to be cleaned and or replaced and thats what Rods talking about

Can you turn it with a hand crank OK? Did the tractor sit idle for a long time? Did it have oil pressure when you last ran it? Sometimes after sitting, the oil pump will lose prime, then the bearings will tighten up. When that happens, take the pipe loose at the oil filter and back feed some oil with a pump oiler.

You say that you cleaned all connections. Be certain the ground strap is cleaned on both ends since that is the positive side and prone to corrosion.

When you try to jump start it, hook the cables both to the starter. If it won't spin, then either the starter or the cables are at fault. Jerry

no the tractor has not been idle. I've cut grass with it twice. I hooked a charger pack directly to the starter with same result? I don't have a hand crank. Thanks
