I just bought a '53 WD. I've started up a couple of times. The first time the battery was dead and I had to jump it from my truck. The second time, I think I was doing a lot of things wrong but she eventually started but just turned over slowly and died (I think she was flooded). This happen about three times. Then nothing. Jump didn't work. Charging the battery didn't work. When I pull on the starter lever there is a faint click and the ground cable jumps/wiggles and there also seems to be an accompanying drain to the battery. The ground cable is not as thick as the cable to the starter and the clamp may be too loose on the terminal. I tried hooking up my jumper cables to the starter and the tractor frame still nothing. I have not yet tested the battery, but it turned it over several times the second time I started her after being dead and that charge was just from running the tractor for about thirty minutes or so. I think part of my problem starting her up the second time was that I didn't have the ignition key turn in the correct position. Which way should I turn it? Is there any fuse in the starting system I could have blown? When the starter stoped truning it was very sudden. Not a gradual slowing down. Any helpful feedback will be greatly appreciated. Tonight I am charge the batter without the battery cables hooked up to see if it charges up any better. Thanks. Oh yes, the ground cable got quite hot when I had the jumper cables going and nothing was happening with the starter.

The battery cables maybe bad or the conections aren't clean and tight. Also the starter may have seen a better day and need to be rebuilt. Also the starter switch maybe bad, but its more likely to be the cables or the starter its self. Most good auto parts stores will check them for free.

Thanks, Old. Now to get that starter off, is it that one big bolt sticking out of the left side of the engine? Also, should that ground cable be just as thick as the starter cable? Mines a guage or two smaller.

The factory ground 'strap' is an non-insulated flat woven conductor about 12" long. It probably has about the same amount of current capability as the cable that goes to the starter.
You need to create a good path from the battery to the starter, whether it is the ground side or the 'hot' side. If you have a connection that is marginal, it will create heat when you put it under load. It could even be at the starter itself; that is, the starter might not be grounded to the clutch housing. You could clean off the tapered bolt that holds the starter in place.
Now, all that being said, I had a 'WD' that absolutely would not turn very fast, no matter what I did with the electrical side. Turns out that the starter shaft was cracked just inboard of the starter nose; so when you turned it on, the armature dragged on the fields. One of my neighbors said he could fix it...he v'd it out and welded it together. It was a tough job to get it straight, but once we did that, it worked perfectly.....sold the tractor a couple of years later.

Thanks T.G, I will try the woven ground. Heading into town today. I didn't think I had the original ground wire. My first clue was it was twice as long as it needed to be.
