Is the amp meter an ancinitial component of the charging system?

If the amp meter is not working or broken or has a short circuit would or could it cause a malfunction in the charging system?, causing the resister on the switch to become red hot when the switch is pushed all the way in?

From the wiring diagram it looks as if the amp meter makes the connection from the generator through the switch to the negative side of the charging system.

UPDATE...

I was having a problem with the charging system on an Allis B.
I had noticed a little smoke coming from the switch box and I investigated...
I found that the resistor had been red hot but was cooling down when I removed
the cover from ground. The switch was pushed all the way in and I noticed that
the amp meter was just sitting at (0). The genie had been working fine and the
switch was working as well. I had 3 amps with the switch pushed in and with lights
on and at the third lever the amp meter showed 10 amps.
With the tractor running I gounded the switch and the resistor became red hot...
So I ungrouned the switch and it cooled down...
So I removed the cut out relay cover and found that with the ground wire to the
switch not connected the cut out was open and when I gounded the switch the cut out
closed and resistor became red hot so I pulled the switch to the third position and
the resistor cooled...

Well today I have located and fixed the Problem...
The first chack that I did was to see if there was any voltage on the "BAT" side of the
cut out relay. I found that there was NO Voltage there...
So, I then removed the wires from the original amp meter and with an ohm meter checked
the amp meter for through put. I found that the amp meter to be defective.
I had a new amp meter from AGCO. I installed it and grounded the switch box and checked
for voltage at the "BAT" side of the cut out relay and now I had voltage!
Started the tractor and WOW... everything is WORKING FINE...
JUST WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT A APPERICATE YOU ASSISTANCE IN THE PROBLEM...
PS... there was no fireworks when this meter went out... I guess that the amp meter
took early retitrement at 58 years...

You can bypass the ammeter if you want. When I recently rewired my C, I just went from the main posts directly to the ignition switch, lights, etc.

I figure if the battery isn't charging I'll know it pretty quick.

The old AC's were positive ground so it makes sense that your charging wire would go to the neg side of the battery, on systems with an ammeter all the current goes thru the meter sometimes they will burn "open" and not charge the bat Ive never seen one shorted to ground but theres lots that I aint seen, you need to take the wires off the meter and check it with a meter, should be zero ohms (or close to that) between the terminals and no continuity from either terminal to ground, you might wanna hollar at OLD hes got a few AC's and might be able to tell ya other things to check...good luck

Can't help on that one. All my Allises have 12 volt systems on them and only one has a genny on it but its 12 volts also. I do know if the amp gauge goes bad it can cause all sorts of funny problems with the system and if it short to ground some how that would be bad and could take out other stuff
