I need a good (new prefered) 3-way switch...can anyone suggest a source?

the 6 volt system uses a cutout swith on the genertor to open the power circuit when motor is off. it does not have a current regulator, that is done by the resistor. you can buy a big 3 ohm resistor and attach it to a toggle switch and do the same thing.--- you can get a voltage regulator that takes the place of the cutout and the resistor on the switch. the voltage regulator does volta, current, and cutout jobs. --- or you can install an alternator and do away with everything except a couple wires. if you need a diagram, send me a note which way you are trying to go. Would help to know the application. Or if you knew the correct designation such as DPDT or DPST. But, just a guess, are you talking about the three position switch used on the headlights? If you have replaced the original generator with an alternator or replaced the cutoff relay with a voltage regulator, you don't need the Allis switch for the headlights. This switch is a multifunction switch which both controlls the generator and the lights. If you still have the cutoff relay and the original generator, you will need this special switch. I don't know if they are still being built and you may have trouble finding them. Maybe Allis would still have some left.

If it were my tractor, I'd toss the cutoff relay and get a voltage regulator - much better for the battery. Or you could replace the generator with an alternator. In these cases, you could go to Radio Shack and buy a 2 position push-pull switch (designation SPST) for your lights.

Duh! Thanks for the nudge. It is for a WD45. The switch is the one next to the key in the panel attached to the battery box. It is my understanding that one position is normal charge, next is overcharge, and last is for headlights. Or some combination of the above. As far as converting to a voltage regulator, I am game for that if someone can walk me through it. Are voltage regulators generic (ie. just ask for a 6 volt one and that is all I have to be concerned with?). Would I have to run additional wiring, or just redirect what is already there? Anyway, electrical is not my strong point, so I'd need some assistance (as in LOTS!). I have no great desire to get rid of the generator as it appears to be working...nor do I feel a need to switch over to 12 volts unless I have to.

The light/charge switch works like this:
pushed in: low current 0-8 amps, rpm dependent.
1st stop: lights, still charging.
second stop: high current 12-18 amps. this is all the way out. If the switch doesn"t seem to be working get some contact cleaner and spray into it while working it. It"s been in service over 50 years, about time for a maintenance call.

OUCH! $77 for a switch? Perhaps I should be thinking more about switching to a voltage regulater...but as in other post, would need some assistance to do that.

By 3-way switch do you mean a SPDT, single pole/double throw, switch. If so you can find them at Radio Shack. If you need one for heavy current try you local auto parts store.
