Allis experts!!! I have a WD-45 that is driving me crazy...It has a miss sometimes and I can't figure it out...I want to pull with it for the first time this weekend, so need any help please.
The motor will start and run fine. it does not smoke while idling more than normal. Tractor has distributor, good cap, rotor, wires, and plugs look a little black, but no oily deposits...no water in fuel. problem is tractor will start and seems to miss occasionally...well mostly...seems like it will smooth out if I pull choke out for a second and then when I push choke back in it will quickly go back to running like it has a miss...seems to have power...misses at idle and at higher rpms...Ideas??? maybe valves...maybe carb or gov rod??? I will try some different plug wires...cannot seem to isolate if it is a specific piston missing...

100 Year Old Quick Plug Check in reply to Motorken, 04-11-2007 04:44:24
Try one plug at a time. Hold the plug wire about 1/8" away from the end of the plug so the spark jumps from the wire to the plug. If the miss stops then that plug is bad. Easy fast way to eliminate a plug problem so you can go to the next check if necessary.

I would check the intake manifold gaskets. I have a WD that I bought cheap because the owner thought the engine was bad.Had trouble getting it home because it miss fired so bad. Put in new intake gaskets and it still runs fine. That was 12 years ago. Larry

Do you have the true copper wire plug wires or are you useing the newer type made for cars and trucks?? If your not useing true wire plug wires that is where I would start first. You say you can choke it and it clears up for a little bit but your plugs are black the 2 don't fit so to speak. To me it sounds like weak spark problems. Do you have the points set correct?? The points should be set at .020. And as I said the plug wires could be the incorrect type and that will cause you problems

If the plug are black your fuel mixture is a little rich. Try leaning you high speed mixture a little. If you do not have an ajustable high speed jet, you float level in the carb. is a little high. Try lowering the float a little. Kent

I agree with Mike. I had a rebuilt WD with the 4 1/8" cylinders that did as you describe. I pulled the brand new Champions and put in the set of AC I'd pulled out during the rebuild. The miss went away. I have no clue why Champions don't work - in fact I haven't even heard a theory. I took those Champions and put them in my Ford 8N and they worked much better - but not perfect.

If you are not using Champions, it sounds like you need a little carb adjustment - like you are a little lean.

Information i've read on occaisional miss is that if your using champions switch to AC Delco or Autolites. I'm currently using #85, can't remember brand.
