Model C valve stem oil seals

How is valve stem oil seal accomplished in a C? Seal in valve guides? Has anyone installed oil seals (found ones that would fit)?

I pulled off a spring from parts head and it looks like a seal could fit beneath the spring assembly when compressed...provided valve travel doesn't cause interferance.

Tractor smokes a bit. It apears that oil intrusion via valve train is cause of smoking...since I ran it intermitantly for a couple weeks without oil pump/pressure and there was no smoking.

I split the tractor and fixed the rusted oil pump, cleaned out oil lines to head and gov. Now it smokes, slightly. Now have 20 psi, oil pressure.

No oil pressure for a couple weeks...a testement to their toughness.

Tractor had sat for about 15 years.

These engines were designed to lube the valve stems without seals. If you place seals on the valve stems when rebuilding the head you will keep the valve stems from getting proper lube. If they are already wore and causing the smoke and you are not rebuilding the head with new guides and valves I suppose it would be worth a try. Guides from NAPA are not real expensive.

How are these valve guides removed/replaced? Pressed in/out?

Yes, they are pressed in or driven out and in. I made up a stepped punch that I can drive them out and new ones back in. The punch that I made goes down the center of the guide about an inch and the outside diameter is slightly smaller than the out side diameter of the guides. That way it can not damage the head or the guides. I have used this punch with my press if I happen to be working on one here at the factory. Most of the time I replace the guides at home where my valve grinding machine is and I use the punch and a hammer.
