radiator overflows

I have an allis b that will overflow if I fill the radiator completely up. It probably runs out 1-2 quarts, I can still see fluid when I take off the radiator cap. I do not have a working temp. guage and I don't know if the radiator has ever been changed. the engine was rebuilt 3 years ago. It runs great. I use it to mow 5 acres. Any thoughts or help? Thanks

normal thing that happens to cars, trucks, and tractors. water expands when it gets hot. if the radiator is full, the water has to go somwhere, so it goes out the overflow (that is what the overflow is for). don't worry about it, just make sure it doesn't get too hot. thats what gauges are for. Bob

Thats pretty normal what happens it when the coolant gets hot it expands so you then have no place for it to go. You need to fill it just to the point that you can see it but not to the point that when cold its full up to the neck of the raidiator.

My WD does about the same thing. After trying several things, I finally installed a coolant recovery system and it works great. The things I did prior to installing the recovery system are: 1)I replaced the head gasket thinking it might be leaking, 2) made sure I had a "deep seating radiator cap" rated at 6 psi -- a good radiator shop will have these, 3) made sure the engine temperature was OK -- runs about 160 to 170 degrees F. I'll be anxious to see what other responses you receive...good luck...RP
