d-17 3 point won't raise

I am looking at buying a d-17 but noticed that the 3 point won't raise. The fluid levels looked ok. Any ideas on what to try or what might be wrong? I hate to buy it and then turn around and dump a ton of money into it.

The hydraulic line runs from the pump area to the rear of the differential. It then goes through the differential case and connects to a hose that runs to the lift cylinder. If this hose is broken, the pump will pump the hydraulic fluid into the differential in a hurry. If the fluid level is steady when the lever is up, then the problem is probably not the hose or the lift cylinder. If the oil level is dropping in the hydraulic reservoir, then the hose is either defective or the lift cylinder seals are bad. Neither is very expensive to repair but it is a job. If the oil level is not dropping, there is probably either a linkage problem (lever not hooked up properly), or the there is a problem with a pump.

my Series 1 wont raise lift without the clutch being engaged...i ran into same prob when i first got it because the clutch pedal had a hook to help starting that cantakerous diesel
