O.K here we go. 2 year old battery, rebuilt generater and new voltage regulater all 2 years ago. Series II D17 gas. Sarted great all winter, after overhaul no matter how cold. Ammeter old and always showed 5 amps when running. 3-4 with lights on plowing snow after dark. Battery now smokes out of one cell when almost dead. Jump starts easy and runs fine with cable unhooked from the battery. I"m going to have the battery checked tomorrow. Oh, new cables also and very good ground. Will take any ideas from this forum.

We converted ours to an alternator, removed the voltage regulator, and used an off-set D19 generator pulley to make it mounting easier. This is not original, but we have had no issues with the charging system since it was converted. We also have converted many other tractors some of them including WC. WD, WD45, D19, 4000 Ford, Farmall H, and M.

Fully charge your battery. Let it set for 1/2 hour or so, and do a draw test. If the needle dumps to the low side, the battery is toast. More than likely, the cell thats smoking is sulfated. If it draws okay and stays rock solid, inspect your cable terminals on the battery side. You may have an acid soaked lead terminal that needs replacing. That could cause a cell to smoke also..
