Hmm, Interesting. I'm wondering if the only problem is that the battery was hooked up wrong (ie. neg. ground). That certainly would account for it running for awhile for the previous owner and then not getting recharged and then him thinking there was a substantial problem with the whole electrical system. The battery was showing 2.2 volts when I got it home and checked, so badly discharged. I'm getting the batt. charged today and will try it tonight...is there a simple way to determine if it actually should be negatively grounded? Ie. is there a chance a previous owner might have switched it to neg. ground? Second, if it should have been positively grounded, what damage might have been done in the process? Might it have damaged the battery beyond repair? How about the generator? From the other posts, it doesn't sound like the ignition system or starter would have been affected...is that correct? Anyway, I'll have the battery charged (assuming it will take a charge) and then depending on what you all have to say, will see where I go from there. If the battery is dead (ie. won't hold a charge), should I be able to briefly hook up a 12 volt to see if the rest of the system is operable (don't want to buy another 6 volt just to find out something else in the system is kaput. I'd prefer to keep it as 6 volt if possible, but if I have to replace components, I might go ahead and convert to permanent 12 volt. If I were to temporarily put in the 12 volt batt., I'd think only the generator might be of concern...should I just disconnect it while the 12 volt batt is in use? Would I hook up the 12 volt as a pos. ground? Thanks VERY much to all who have replied.
