I know it's an off brand - it ain't AC but I know someone here will have some suggestions - My 86 year old neighbor's tractor died in his garden. It's a Long 350 with a 3 cylinder diesel engine. He said he'd lowered his plow a little and he started to loose power until the engine stalled. He added 5 gallons of fuel before he started plowing.
I can see the fuel in the tank & the radiator is full of water. I turned it over a few times and didn't see any white smoke coming out of the pipe. Would a fuel filter clog that suddenly? It has cartridge type fuel filters. The one I can see looks OLD.
Other than bleeding some injectors I've got VERY limited diesel experience - any suggestions will be welcome! Thanks!

Thanks for the info, guys! I know where to start looking now - maybe I can get it running for him before he has to get a real mechanic to make a field call.

if it happened suddenly take the fitting off the hand pump coming from the tank see if you have flow. if no flow or small flow is shown .You have two possiblities here the banjo fitting it the first place to plug take the fitting out of the hose and check for dirt, then check in the tank I have found strange things in the fuel tanks over the years, leaves, dead mouse, sock used as a cap that fell in side, stick used for fuel guages ect.....

check all the lines for cracks...the stock rubber deterioates pretty bad...by all means change the filters if they look bad...you mite also give tractor a breath of starting fluid to rule out timing components

Some possibilities: Water in the fuel can that he used; Dirty fuel filters; Fuel pump problem.

Usually there is a valve on a diesel tractor fuel tank to drain off water. There might also be one on the filter housing. Water settles to the bottom of the tank or filter. Diesels don't like water at all. Somewhere there is a bleeder that you open to bleed off air and/or water in the lines, usually more than one. If he has an owner's manual, it should address bleeding of the fuel system...

If the fuel fiter look OLD you need to replace them. I am not familiar with Longs. Does it have one fuel filter or two? If it has one or two you need to replace ALL of the fuel filters and bleed the fuel system starting with the filters and ending at the injector pump. Rarly do you need to bleed the injectors but if you do all you need to do is loosen each injector line a quarter of a turn as you crank the engine. WATCH fuel spray as it can penetrate your skin. Do not try bleeding the injectors untill you have replaced the fuel filter and bleed them first. If you have little deisel experiance buy the IT SHOP MANUEL that covers the tractor before you try to help your neighbor.
