Pulled starter turned over few times and started to smoke at starter conection. Melted postive battery connector off before I got battery unhooked. Could starter have short and did I just burn it up?

Inspect your starter cables. If everything has been working normally and then this happened, you may just need to either clean the cable connection or renew the cables. Usually, smoke is an indication of a bad connection. Clean up your cables and do an inspection on them. Corrosion plays havoc with cables. Also, make sure you have the correct size cable to do the job especially if it's still the 6V system on board. We make cables for most AC machines if you need any. Just hooked battery back up nothing changed from last time tractor was running. Thought I might have a short in battery cable leading to starter, grounded out. Was getting dark did not get to check everything out.Just hope I did not mess up the starter.

Was the starter switch removed and the triangular insulating side pieces left out?

That is a positive ground.Did you hook it up backwards?
