I've been looking at a WD 45 and cannot see how the valve links to the rock shaft. How does it know the position of the lift?

There is no link between the lift arm shaft and the control valve. When using traction booster, more pressure is applied to the lift arms as the load increases (you can see the link rod between the snap coupler housing and the hydraulic pump), otherwise, the lift is just controlled by the operator.

Thanks, I understand how the traction booster works, but what stops the hydraulic rams and keeps them from going to full extension. Doesn't the WD45 work like the traditional lift in that you can raise the equipment a little at a time? I can find no linkage to give feedback to the valve as to how far the ram has moved.

You simply adjust the hydraulic pump to hold position settings (described in your owners manual or on the decal on the battery box). If you're doing something where you want the rams stopped at a certain position (say halfway out) you just move the hydraulic lever to the middle detent position when they get there. If you're talking about what keeps them from going to full extension while using traction booster, then it's because in the traction booster setting, the pressure on the rams is much less than when lifting and also you adjust the hydraulic lever so that the traction booster gauge is about straight up and down. This much pressure will transfer a lot of weight but won't lift the implement.
