how do you check a solonoid that will start the engine when you put a screw driver across the terminals instead of the key switch doing what it is supposed to do

there should be one or two small terminals on the solenoid. the key or starter button puts 12 volts to one small terminal and either the case is grounded or the other small terminal is grounded. that makes the coil in the solenoid magnetize. the magnet pulls a plate down and touches the two big terminals together, similar to what you are doing with the screw driver external. like mentioned, make sure you are in neutral.

First off; be SURE the machine is in neutral and your life insurance is paid up; if your going to be starting it that way!
