starter is slow like high in time, but time is ok starter has been to the shop, battry is hot [6 volt] 8 volt battry hot, new ground, starts easly if we boost it, cable ends are clean, maby I will change starter cable it is last thing I can think about. it use to start easly but oh well, who wooda thought to many old tractors and not enough time Buford

its the starter they will check out okay on the bench because there is no load but put them in and they drag put in a new starter and i guarentt she will spin like new if not go 12 volt and end of problem speaking from experinece baldwin here

Many thanks guys I have done most of what you have said battry was load tested at shop it was good, cables are for 6 volt system, shop where starter was worked has a very good rep for work they do all of our workowner is of the old shool does a good job OLD I will try what you said as I read your post I could see where the ground at the starter would or might be the probleum I will let you know Buford

As the guys mentioned, cables, battery, and dirty connections are usually the first thing to check for poor starter operation. The other problem, is a 60 year old starter with the original amature in it that has opens in spots which cuts torque and power down emensley in these old units. Every starter that we"ve ever done over has a poor arm in it whether they were just so called "rebuilt" or not...

I am with Butch on this one (maybe) Take hold of your battery cable with one hand while running the starter with the other. Have the battery at full charge and run it until it starts to slow even more. If the cable gets warm you need a larger diameter cable. At the same time put your fingers on the ground cable connections as well as the starter cable connections. Feel for hot places. Any time you are losing amps you are turning that area into an electric heater. If it is not the cable you can find the place that is losing your amps. If it is the starter its self that is getting hot then you could have a bad ground connection in the starter lock stud or not enough windings as was stated by someone below that dont know me. Anymore. Since he got rich. Or sumpthin.

All of what has been said is right on plus check battery cable sizing, must be the large ones for 6 volts. Another thing is if the starter has been through a cheapo rebuilder at some point you could be missing enough windings to cause problems, been there.

Buford --- From what you say,it sounds like your battery.....hydrometer is the best test for a wet battery (with caps).next best is load check battery tester..... clamp on tester apply a load then read the checker..... ..just making sparks fly is not a good check..... .before you spend money take your battery in for a check..... .Don

PS. Harber Frieght has there load tester on sale right now.....about $20..... .

Pull the starter and clean both the area it slips into and the starer. Also you should clean the tapper bolt and where it goes into the starter. Sounds like you may have a weak ground where the starter mounts to the bell houseing
